I really enjoy Things with Cinnamon in them. It not only tastes great, but the smell is awesome as well.
One of those awesome Things is the humble, yet delicious Franzbrötchen. I just love those.
Franzbrötchen are a real Treat, especially when they are freshly made and still hot from the Oven. They are just that much more awesome fresh!

A Franzbrötchen might look like a flat, cinnamony Croissant suggesting it is a French Treat. That really is not the Case though. While it might have been inspired by the French, it is not.
It was actually conceived in French occupied Hamburg somewhen between 1806 and 1814 during the napoleonic Wars.
It is rumoured that a Baker might have made Croissants once and accidentally burned once in a Pan with some Cinnamon and Butter one Day and thus crated the Franzbrötchen.
It might also just have been a Baker called Franz who created something new and just needed a Name for it.
The actual Origins, except for the bit about Hamburg are unknown though. Luckily, that does not really matter. Franzbrötchen are definitely awesome.

Originally only available in and around Hamburg, the Franzbrötchen is available all over Germany since the beginning of the 20th Century.
There are actually a few Variations, some with Raisins, Chocolate, Marzipan or even Pumpkin Seeds. For me, the only real Franzbrötchen is the original with Cinnamon though.
Also, the best FRanzbrötchen are still available in Hamburg.
